Bridge Coatings Inspector Program (BCI)

This five to six-day course is intended to help individuals gain crucial knowledge in regards to becoming a successful bridge coatings inspector. Level one takes place during the first five days while an additional sixth day is available for those who are interested in acquiring a level two certification. This course is accomplished by focusing on the fundamentals of how to inspect surface preparation and application of protective coatings on bridge steel.

Following completion of the course(s), individuals will have better understandings of different situations which will affect inspection in the field including (but not limited to):

  • Containment
  • Field safety hazards
  • Changing weather conditions
  • Requirements when inspecting new bridge steel

Course Format

The first four days of the program are classroom lectures accompanied by quizzes, group exercises, and hands on workshops. On the fifth day, a final course exam is administered which students are then provided two hours to complete. The first portion is a 100-question multiple choice exam accompanied by a hands on, practical exam. In order to achieve BCI Level 2 inspector status, the individual must obtain at least an 80% on the written certification as well as inspection training exam.
